Free floor plan creators in 2026: what free includes
Every floor plan tool claims a free tier, so the useful question is what free actually includes: whether you can furnish and choose finishes, whether you can export the plan, whether it is watermarked, and where the meter starts. Here are eight tools compared on exactly that, checked against each vendor's own pricing and documentation. Full disclosure: Gridsnap is ours. Gridsnap is ours, so judge this entry against the table like the rest. It works to exact dimensions in the browser, and the same project covers the layout, the furniture and the finishes: floors, single wall faces and furniture parts from built-in materials and the Gridsnap texture library. The free tier includes the exports, from a scaled vector PDF to a Textured plan with a finish legend and a DWG. The free tier does not make perspective images or video and does not take uploaded textures. Gridsnap Pro ($39 once for 90 days, $19/month or $149/year) adds AI presentation images from a 3D view or from above (AI-generated, so details may differ from the design), generated layouts, room kits, finish schemes, design options, automatic dimensions, material quantities, additional checks and unlimited synced projects.

A long-running browser planner with a very large library of furniture and materials and furnished 3D images up to 8K on its paid project levels. The free tier is fine for sketching and furnishing a layout; clean exports start with a per-project upgrade paid in credits. Read the export column before committing an afternoon to it.

Good for: Free furnished renders for decorating ideas
If what you want from a free tool is furnished pictures, Homestyler’s free plan is generous: unlimited 1K renders with a large model library. It is an interior visualisation tool at heart, with plans as the input and renders as the output, so measured drawings are not its focus.
Free tier verdict: Worth trying for free renders when decorating and moodboarding a room.

Good for: Capturing an existing building with a phone
A different kind of tool from the rest of this list: it measures existing buildings rather than designing new ones. You walk the rooms with a phone and a floor plan comes out, which makes its two free projects useful for a one-off survey of your own home before designing the change in another tool.

RoomSketcher’s polished, branded floor plans, 3D Photos and 360 views are aimed at property marketing, and that polish is what the subscription and credits buy. The free tier lets you draw, furnish and look around; downloading a finished plan is a small one-time purchase. It also offers a floor-plan ordering service.

Good for: Learning general 3D modelling
SketchUp Free is a capable free 3D modeller, but a modeller rather than a floor plan tool: walls are geometry you construct, and the free plan’s exports are SKP, PNG and STL, so scaled drawing sheets and CAD files are outside it. People who enjoy it are usually modelling the whole house in 3D for its own sake.
Free tier verdict: Choose it to learn 3D modelling on a real project, not to produce a floor plan quickly.
Sweet Home 3D
Good for: Fully free, open-source interior design on the desktop
The tool on this list with no paid desktop tier at all. Two decades of open-source maintenance, a large free library, your own models and textures, rendered photos and videos, and a desktop app that works offline. It is centred on furnishing and visualising an interior rather than on drawing sets.
Free tier verdict: Hard to beat if the budget is exactly zero and you are happy on a desktop app.

Which floor plan creator is completely free?
Sweet Home 3D’s desktop and online versions are entirely free and open source; only its mobile app is paid. Among freemium tools, Gridsnap includes drawing, furnishing, finishes and its PDF, PNG, DWG and DXF exports on the free tier, where several others watermark or meter exports.
Can I make a floor plan for free and give it to a builder?
Yes. Watch the export: many free tiers watermark images or put PDF and CAD output behind payment.
