Placing furniture from the catalog

Free — no account needed Updated 2026-10-19

Press O for Furniture, pick an item from the thumbnail picker — there is a Search items… box at the top — and click to place it. Press C for Structure (columns, chimney), which is the same gesture with its own list: structure is part of the building, not the furnishing, so it has its own tool and its own remembered item.

Furnishing is free and unlimited.

The categories

Living, dining, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, sauna, technical, garden and people. Structure — chimneys, columns, beams — is filtered out of the furniture picker because it has its own tool. The people category holds the scale figures, which behave differently from everything else here.

Things snap to where they belong

Drop a sofa, a bed, a wardrobe, a counter, a basin or a toilet within about 300 mm of a wall and it turns and sits flush against the wall face, the way it would really be placed. Drop it into a corner and the second wall takes the side flush too. Items that belong in the middle of a room — a dining table, an island — do not do this.

Chimneys back onto walls the same way, and columns align to the structural grid. A few kinds are meant to sit inside the wall — a recessed cabinet — and those are sunk into the wall body instead of standing against it.

Size, height and colour

A selected item has Centre, Width, Depth, Rotation and Height in the panel, plus fields particular to what it is — a corner sofa gets a Chaise width and Chaise length, a fridge and a boiler have their own. Every item can take a colour, which fills its footprint outline on the plan under the symbol linework and tints it in 3D.

Kitchen cabinets: door style and handles

Kitchen units (counters, the sink and hob units, wall and tall cabinets, the island, and the integrated fridge, oven, dishwasher and hood) have two more rows in the panel:

  • Door style: Flat slab fronts, Shaker (a square frame round a recessed panel) or Raised (the frame round a raised panel). Every framed front in the kitchen uses the same frame width. A glazed door in a framed style keeps its glass inside the frame.
  • Top drawers, under a framed style: the shallow drawers under the worktop are Plain slabs by default, as in most shaker kitchens, or Framed like the doors. Deeper drawers are always framed.
  • Handles: a Bar, a Long bar, a Knob, an Edge pull along the front’s edge, or None for push-to-open fronts. Knobs sit at the centre of a drawer and on the top rail of a framed door.

Match all kitchen units gives every kitchen unit on the storey the same door style and handles in one undo step, since a fitted kitchen is one design. Only the choices a unit has are changed: a wine cooler takes the handles but keeps its glass door. The style changes how the units look in 3D, not their size or the plan.

Stacked items

Things do sit on top of each other — a lamp on a table, a pot on a worktop. Clicking picks the topmost, smallest, most recent of them first; click again without moving and the selection cycles down the stack, so the table under the lamp is one extra click away rather than unreachable.

What this doesn’t do

  • No custom catalog items. You cannot add your own model — draw one with the sketch tool if the catalog has nothing close.
  • Furniture is not counted. It is not in the room, door or window schedules and not in the quantity takeoff.
  • Nothing stops overlaps. Two items can occupy the same space; the plan check is what tells you a room is over-furnished or a door is blocked.
